A new, old face at the gym

Recommended Posts

Joe Roark

In April 2020, a friend at the gym told me that his wife was losing her job, and that their budget would need to be adjusted. He is working but when two incomes reduce to one income, matters of money change, and pruning unnecessary expenses becomes real.

I had not seen him at the gym until yesterday. His wife has a new job, and he rejoined the gym. It was wonderful seeing him again.

Another friend moved to southern Illinois, so he is no longer at the gym.

I thought how similar this is to our forum. People are here, and people are gone, to reappear months or years later. Most of the time I have no idea why this happens, although in a few cases I am blamed for limiting the scope of what can be discussed here, and in a few cases I am called names because I fail to see the bigger, world, picture. In fact, they fail to see the smaller (function) picture of this forum- which has nothing to do with politics or religion or porn, except in rare cases where those worlds collide with the iron game. And then, only to the degree that the iron game remains the focus. Senator so-and-so lifts weights. Not, here are that Senator's political beliefs.

So, thanks to those of you who grasp our goal and remain to enhance that goal.

I am not a vengeful person, so I usually accept the request from someone who blasted me who wants back in. But I am also not a fool, and know when I am being played, so there are some people who will never be allowed back in.

Must run for now- I need to post on a political forum that they need to allow discussion of the history of the clean and jerk.

funny ....i watched the TV interview that Ken posted

and when the younger Ken spoke my reaction was

"but he sounds so American !!!!!!"

you see we only read typed posts from members

we all seem pretty much the same

if members heard me speak , i would sound very strange (SA accent sounds sort of harsh like an Australian accent but not really  )

the weirdness of social media , we think we "know" people but do we really ?

Yes Peter
I traveled a lot with lifting and Athletics

i fell in love with Scotland ....who wouldnt?

i spite of being born in Africa i has heartbroken to leave the UK

bad weather and all

it was the people and countryside i knew id miss the most

i did not like SA when i first arrived

it seemed materialistic and plastic

i felt maybe like the USA must be

Britain and the British were for me realistic and down to earth

They didnt care if you were a street sweeper or engineer it was all the same to them

But one goes where life takes you and here i am..

Liam

October  17, 1968 the FIHC Congress met in Mexico City. One wonders with the current state of world weightlifting if the sport has a future.

I know, right? I've thought about that for, well, a lot of years. Online, we know parts of people, the parts presented to us by them and then filtered somewhat and made into a "whole person" by us after they're presented in many cases. Of course, once the person we're part of creating a perception of steps out of line or becomes a right pain too often the sane response is nixing them and moving forward.

This "partial knowledge" of people we interact with online isn't very different from our interactions in the physical world. Anyone who's been around the block a few times realizes that when it comes to people in the physical world as well, what you're seeing and getting is not the complete view of an individual. Even most long, loooong term relationships still have some parts hidden, be they thoughts or actions. Being allowed, being able to see a person in close-to-their entirety is actually quite rare, and something of an honor in my view.

We are fair strange, we people!
